Tutorial 4: Django's book structure

Tutorial

Each Django document is a complete book with a titlepage, a preface, illustrations, text, etc. as well of course as a series of music sections. See this PDF document for an illustration of the book features.

  • Note: The book features are only fully visible in Print preview and print modes.
  • Note: It is up to you to decide if you want those options to become active or if you just want to print a single section on its own. To print only a given section open the page settings dialog and uncheck the "Print all sections" box.

You have access to several important properties dialogs:

I.-The Document dialog, that controls values that apply to the document as a whole. That dialog in turn controls several other dialogs:

  • The page settings dialog: this controls a number of global values that apply across al sections, such as margins, printing orientation, whether all sections are printed or just the active one, pagination style and fonts, etc.
  • The titlepage dialog controls the elements that are included on the titlepage as well as other preliminary elements such as whether to print a preface or create a table of contents. It also gives you access to the formatted text box for the titlepage. This is an RTF editor that allows you to create complex text styles.
  • The section dialog gives you access to the active section properties: title, author, comment, time signature, key, system spacing and a few other ones
  • The system dialog contains properties common to all the staves in a system. It allows you for instance to indent a system, to add a caption and even a caption image. If you check the Hidden box, a blank space is created where the system would normally display. Together with the system's formatted text box, this is convenient to insert a paragraph of text right in the middle of a music section.
  • Finally, but not least, the instrument settings dialog gives you access to a large number of options regarding that instrument. This is most conveniently accesses by double-clicking on the staff for that instrument.

There are shortcut buttons to most of those dialogs on the right hand-side of the screen.

Note: Although people's logic varies from one person to the next, you may be able to guess where one or another option is by wondering if it applies to the document as a whole, the section, the system, or a specific instrument.
